Woodcock-Johnson® IV

Grades K–12 Achievement Test

We have great experience with the most commonly performed nationally standardized achievement tests. The Woodcock-Johnson is our favorite. It is quick, gentle, and allows us to give you a consultation so that you understand the results. We want you to be able to have results that you can use to help you know where the child is strong and if they have areas of weakness in their academics. The test meets North Carolina law for homeschoolers and is used in many public and private schools.

  • Be confident in knowing where your student is academically.

  • Don’t Wait! You don’t have to wait weeks for results. Receive your results immediately.

  • Get curriculum suggestions based on our decades of testing and homeschool experience.

  • We provide the most up-to-date norms.

  • It is great for all ages.

  • It is gentle. A child can take breaks if needed.

  • Most students enjoy not having to fill in bubbles and enjoy the variety of the test and do not get bored or have to read all of the test to themselves.

  • The test takes only 60 to 90 minutes for most students.

  • Immediately after testing, you will get 3 reports, guides with the definitions of the assessments and statistics, and a 20 minute consultation.

  • An additional curriculum consultation can be set up if needed.

  • We can make recommendations for strategies for intervention or if further testing is recommended based on a suspected learning glitch.

  • Zoom – Under strict guidelines, and in special circumstances, we can do the Woodcock-Johnson IV test by zoom. Please email us about your special needs.

  • It is available year round.

Why The Woodcock Johnson?

Our Tests

  • Woodcock-Johnson Basic

A Basic Woodcock-Johnson test consists of 9 tests - 3 each in Reading, Writing, and Math. It takes about 90 minutes and most of it is not timed. Immediately afterward you will get a report and a consultation. Rest in our waiting area while your student shows us what they have been learning!

The Basic WJ meets NC law for the yearly nationally standardized achievement test requirement.

  • Woodcock-Johnson Basic Plus

Add on Science, Social Studies, and Humanities to the Basic WJ Package. It adds only about 12 minutes of testing time.

  • Woodcock-Johnson with Reading Intensive, Kindergarten Readiness

Special packages can be administered if a child is struggling with reading. Assess them at the beginning of the year and then mid-year or after tutoring (for example) to measure phoneme and grapheme awareness and tutoring success.

Some schools want a Kindergarten Readiness test given to assess if a young child is ready for kindergarten.

Who are our tests for?

The WoodcockJohnson is ideal for students who:

  • Have previous test scores that are extremely high or low for their grade level, or that do not reflect true performance.

  • Are reading very well or very poorly for his or her age.

  • Appear to be struggling in certain areas and a more thorough evaluation for learning differences is desired. If you think additional testing will be needed, choose the WJIV (not WJIII).

  • Have parents who feel the need for outside input regarding their child’s achievement level and/or curriculum choices.

  • Are easily distracted and would not do well in a classroom or on a multiple choice test.

  • Need test results quickly.  (We generate the report immediately after testing.)

  • Need additional instructional strategies or recommendations.

  • Will need additional testing for learning glitches.

  • Are transitioning from one school to another and the school needs an assessment to help them know where to place the child.

  • Are applying for programs for gifted students.
