Frequently asked questions.

 FAQs

  • In North Carolina, it is the law to test your student annually. Other state laws can be found at www.hslda.org. Standardized tests can affirm both your child’s learning progress and your teaching ability. An objective evaluation can provide confirmation of your success, and encourage both teacher and student. Standardized tests might also point out weaknesses that you may not have noticed, especially in light of national standards.

  • We can test in our Apex, NC office or by Zoom. We can develop different packages for you but the most common are:

    • Basic WJ Package: (9 tests: 3 each in Reading, Writing and Math)

    • Basic Plus (9 tests above plus Science, Social Studies, Humanities).

    • Basic with extra Reading Assessments: This is helpful to assess Phonemes and Graphemes and before and after reading tutoring.

    • Kindergarten Readiness

  • The Woodcock-Johnson is oral and paper/pencil format, and is administered at our facility by one of our trained administrators. Unlike the Stanford, Iowa, TerraNova and most other tests, it is not multiple choice, fill-in-the-bubble.

  • The Woodcock-Johnson can only be given by a specially trained administrator.

  • Children who are not reading as well as peers, working above or below typical grades, or who have attention difficulties, might fare better with the Woodcock-Johnson test since it goes as low and as high as needed, and it is mostly read to the student, and students can take breaks as needed. Children with slower processing speeds might fare better with the Woodcock-Johnson test since it is mostly untimed.

  • The Woodcock-Johnson test goes as low as a child needs to and as high as they can. You will tell the test administrator the months of the school grade they have had (overall) in order for the report norms. (Norms are who they will be compared to. So if a child has just had 3 months of 5th grade, they will only be compared to other children who have had 3 months of 5th grade.)

  • Groups can be tested together on some of the tests but then each student will need to go individually.
